Professor Jason Powell

Professor Jason Powell BA (Hons), MA, PhD, FHEA, FinstAM, FCMI, CSBP, AoU, FRSA is Provost, Chief Academic Officer and Professor at Crescent College Birmingham. Concurrently, he holds an Adjunct Professorship at McMaster University; Distinguished Honorary Professor at Centre for Education, Social and Humanitarian Studies, MSU; Honorary Professor at AAREF; & Honorary Fellow at University of Liverpool. Recently, Professor Powell was President of MILE College having served as its Provost.

Professor Powell holds a BA (Hons) First Class Honours degree from Liverpool John Moores University; Master of Arts from the University of Liverpool; and PhD in Social Gerontology (awarded without correction) from Liverpool John Moores University. He holds a PG Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education from the Open University. He is a SEDA Accredited Teacher in Higher Education. In addition, he is Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is a Chartered Management Institute Fellow and Fellow of the Institute of Administrative Management. He is a Full Member of the Institute of Leadership and Management. He is an accredited Executive Coach, Project Management Institute. He was elected Academician by the Academy of Urbanism and elected Companion of the Society of Bereavement Practitioners (7th ever in history).

Professor Powell became a University Lecturer in Criminal Justice and Sociology in 1995.

He began a career in management at the University of Salford in 2001-4 as Associate Head of School of Community, Health Sciences and Social Care and Director of Admissions. Between 2004-9, He became a 2x Associate Dean and Assc. Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool. He was Associate Dean of Faculty of Environmental Studies; Associate Dean of Faculty of Arts (acting); and Associate PVC of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (responsible for 15 Schools/Departments). He was also Reader in Sociology and Social Policy and Executive Director of Knowledge Exchange.



From there, he was appointed Professor of Community Leadership, Acting Dean and Head of Social Sciences at UCLan before moving to MMU where he was Professor of Community Practice and Social Justice and Head of Social Care Research. He moved to Coventry University where he was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and Professor of Social Gerontology. Between 2014-19, he was Professor of Social Gerontology & Sociology at The University of Chester. He was also Strategic Lead for Research and Impact. He has worked as Associate Dean of School of Health and Social Care and Professor of Social Gerontology at Staffordshire University; Associate Dean of the Scholars School System University College. He has served as President of Manchester Institute of Learning and Excellence having been its Provost and Chief Academic Officer. He was Director of Partnerships for SMS Higher Education Group and responsible for 250% increase in University partnerships.

He has been part of faculty Senior Management Teams that have had combined turnover of £250 million+.

Professor Powell was Senior Vice President of Seniors4Seniors in Colorado. He has served as Honorary Director of Age Nigeria; Honorary Director of GRCF-Uganda. He is Patron of the Society of Bereavement Practitioners and Patron of the Faculty of Funeral Celebrants in the United Kingdom.

Professor Powell’s research focuses on ageing and relationship to care, global ageing, ageing in care settings and care relations; and meta theory and methodology, and Foucauldian gerontology. He has over 700 publications including over 90+ academic books. Professor Powell has an H-Index score of 117 (‘world class’) with 50,000+ research citations by his global research peers (Google Scholar). He is ranked #1 most cited researcher of all time for research citations on ‘age’, ‘health and social care’, ‘sociology of ageing’ and ‘care’.

He has his research and knowledge exchange funded by a number of funding bodies, eg, ESF Objective 3, St Helens CVS, VOLA, HEIF, EU Commission, National Lottery Research Programmes, Regional Development Agency; and Research Councils. His personal research generated is over £6,000,000:00+ or $8,1000000:00+.

Professor Powell is Editor-in-Chief, illness, Crisis and Loss (SAGE) and Associate Editor of The Canadian Journal of Sociology which is one of the most prestigious social science journals in the world. He is Series Editor, International Perspectives on Aging (Springer Nature).

He serves on 100+ editorial boards including Social Forces. The Journal of Applied Gerontology had a special issue on his work on Foucauldian Gerontology. He is a former Winner of the ‘Highly Commended Article of the Year’, International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy. Recently, he was a winner of the Best Researcher Award (2022) by INSO.
